Amazonite is not a separate mineral species. It is the beautiful blue-green variety of potassium feldspar known most commonly as microcline, part of the enormous feldspar family that makes up a remarkable amount of Earth’s crust.

Its colour is especially fascinating. Scientists have linked Amazonite’s famous turquoise, green and blue-green tones primarily to trace lead interacting with structural features within the feldspar crystal lattice, with other mechanisms proposed for some material.

Amazonite was used for jewellery, beads, amulets and colourful inlays during Dynastic Egypt. Its blue-green colour belonged to an Egyptian visual world in which turquoise and green tones could carry powerful associations with life, regeneration and protection. Pieces of Amazonite were worked into objects intended not merely to decorate the living, but to accompany human beings into sacred and funerary spaces.

Its modern name carries another mystery. Amazonite was named in the nineteenth century after the Amazon region, despite the historical connection between the stone and the Amazon River being surprisingly uncertain. The name endured anyway, leaving this ancient feldspar wrapped in the imagery of another vast blue-green world.
