Labradorite’s extraordinary flash has a name: labradorescence.

Those electric blues, greens, golds, violets and occasional fiery colours are not simply pigment sitting on the stone’s surface. Labradorite developed extremely fine internal structures as its mineral material cooled, and light interacting with those layers creates the spectacular interference colours we see.

That is why a piece can appear comparatively quiet from one direction and suddenly ignite when it moves.

Even more fascinating, not every Labradorite develops equally strong labradorescence. The mineral needed the right composition, internal structure and geological conditions for its hidden light show to become possible.

Its tiny universe really did require the right conditions to reveal itself.

Labradorite takes its name from Labrador in Canada, where European records of the mineral date to the eighteenth century. Material from the region became celebrated for an optical phenomenon so distinctive that the word labradorescence would eventually carry the place name into mineralogy itself.

Its appearance has naturally inspired stories almost as extraordinary as the stone. A widely repeated modern legend imagines the Aurora Borealis once trapped within Labradorite, its northern lights still flashing through the rock whenever it catches the right angle.

The story is beautiful, but its frequent attribution as a documented ancient Inuit legend is difficult to verify responsibly. Rather than assigning an uncertain story to a specific Indigenous tradition, it is perhaps enough to appreciate why generations of storytellers have looked into Labradorite and seen the sky.

It truly can resemble a piece of the aurora captured beneath stone.

Because labradorescence depends on how light interacts with structures inside the mineral, skilled cutters study rough Labradorite carefully before shaping it. The angle chosen can determine whether a finished piece displays a dramatic face-up flash or keeps much of its colour hidden.

Collectors often appreciate the brightness, coverage, colour range and number of angles from which the flash can be seen. Blue and green are iconic, while pieces showing strong gold, orange, violet or broad multicoloured displays can be particularly captivating.
