Its name comes from the Greek word lepidos, meaning scale, referring to this layered structure. The shimmering, page-like flakes visible within some Lepidolite specimens are not surface decoration. They reflect the way the mineral itself is built, layer upon delicate layer.

Its lilac, pink and violet colouring is commonly connected with manganese within its mineral structure, while Lepidolite is also an important natural source of lithium.
