Selenite is a crystalline form of gypsum, with the chemical formula CaSO₄·2H₂O.

That final part is particularly fascinating.

Selenite literally contains water molecules within its crystal structure.

And under extraordinary geological conditions, gypsum can grow to almost unbelievable proportions.

Deep beneath Naica in Chihuahua, Mexico, the famous Cave of the Crystals contains enormous transparent gypsum crystals, some stretching many metres through the cavern.

It is one of those rare places on Earth that looks less like geology and more like somebody imagined the inside of a crystal kingdom and somehow made it real.

Selenite’s relationship with the Moon begins in its very name.

The word Selenite comes from the Greek selēnē, meaning moon, a word inseparably associated with Selene, the ancient Greek personification and goddess of the Moon.

In Greek mythology, Selene was imagined travelling across the night sky in a shining chariot, illuminating the darkness below.

The mineral’s pale, luminous appearance made the lunar name remarkably fitting.

But Selenite also belongs to a much larger geological and human story through its parent mineral, gypsum.

Gypsum has been worked with for thousands of years. Different forms have been used historically in plaster, decorative objects, architectural elements and sculpture. Fine-grained varieties associated with the broader gypsum family have also been used in translucent decorative work, allowing light to pass softly through stone.

This history requires one important distinction.

Not every historical reference to gypsum or alabaster refers specifically to the transparent crystal habit mineralogists call Selenite today, and modern metaphysical traditions surrounding Selenite should not automatically be projected backwards into ancient cultures.

Its contemporary spiritual identity has grown around the extraordinary symbolism the mineral naturally inspires.

Light.

Moon.

Purification.

Stillness.

Something delicate formed by the Earth that somehow looks as though it belongs to the sky.

Many of the luminous white fibrous crystals sold throughout the crystal world as Selenite logs, Selenite wands and Selenite charging pieces are technically Satin Spar Gypsum.

True mineralogical Selenite and Satin Spar are both forms or crystal habits of gypsum and share the same fundamental chemical composition, but they grow differently.

Mineralogical Selenite is typically transparent to translucent and may form clear, tabular, bladed or sheet-like crystals.

Satin Spar is characteristically fibrous, creating the silky parallel lines and extraordinary luminous sheen seen in many familiar white “Selenite” pieces.

Move a polished or naturally fibrous piece beneath the light and you may notice a glowing band appear to travel across its surface.

That optical effect is part of what gives Satin Spar its almost fibre-optic appearance.

The name Selenite has become deeply established within the crystal trade as a familiar umbrella name for these pale gypsum pieces, so seeing a fibrous Selenite log does not mean you have somehow received a completely unrelated mineral.

Rather, you have discovered one of those wonderful moments where mineralogical terminology and crystal-trade language overlap without being exactly the same.
