Smoky Quartz ranges from pale champagne-grey and warm tea-brown to deep charcoal. Exceptionally dark material is sometimes called Morion, while historically significant smoky quartz from Scotland may be known as Cairngorm Quartz.

Colour alone does not determine quality or authenticity. Collectors may also appreciate transparency, natural zoning, internal veils, rainbows, inclusions, phantoms, intact crystal faces and verified locality. Very uniformly dark commercial pieces may have been artificially irradiated, although visual inspection alone cannot always distinguish natural colour from treatment because both arise through a closely related process within genuine quartz.

Heat and prolonged strong sunlight can weaken Smoky Quartz’s colour centres and cause fading. Experienced collectors therefore protect significant specimens from hot display cases, harsh windowsills and dramatic temperature changes.
